AusVaxSafety vaccine safety reports now available

Two new AusVaxSafety reports – Vaccine safety in Australia summary report 2021 and COVID-19 vaccine surveillance summary report 2021 – are now available on the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care website.

Using de-identified data reported directly from people receiving vaccines (or their parent or carer), AusVaxSafety monitors adverse events following immunisation and facilitates early detection of potential vaccine safety issues to ensure the continuing safety of vaccines used in Australia.

Vaccine safety in Australia AusVaxSafety summary report 2021

The Vaccine safety in Australia AusVaxSafety summary report shows how people receiving vaccines, or their parents and carers, responded to an SMS about their health a few days after their vaccination at each schedule point in the National Immunisation Program (NIP) in Australia in 2021.

The report includes infographics highlighting:

•    percentage of people who reported a side effect following vaccination
•    percentage of people who visited a doctor or emergency department in the days after vaccination
•    most commonly reported adverse events for each vaccine
•    vaccines given at each schedule point and what they protect against
•    respondent demographics.

These infographics are an excellent resource for healthcare providers to use when counselling patients on the short-term safety of vaccines at each schedule point on the NIP and can help individuals when planning for vaccination.

The report includes infographics for all COVID-19 vaccine brands used in Australia in 2021 and data for each dose are displayed side-by-side. Data are presented for all participants and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants, highlighting:

-    percentage of participants who reported a side effect following COVID-19 vaccination
-    percentage of those who visited a doctor or emergency department in the days after COVID-19 vaccination
-    most commonly reported adverse events
-    percentage of those who reported missing work, study or routine activities after COVID-19 vaccination
-    respondent demographics.

These infographics are an excellent resource for healthcare providers to use when counselling patients on the short-term safety of COVID-19 vaccines and can help individuals when planning for COVID-19 vaccination.
