Australia’s active vaccine safety system
Immunisation providers play a key role in AusVaxSafety surveillance in Australia. AusVaxSafety has been implemented in more than 400 immunisation sites across Australia, including general practices, pharmacies, hospitals, schools, community clinics and Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisations.
Immunisation provider involvement allows AusVaxSafety to collect vaccine safety data directly from people receiving vaccines via online surveys. In most instances, surveillance is fully integrated into clinical practice software and requires no effort from the provider.
AusVaxSafety selects surveillance sites with the aim of collecting data that is representative of the Australian population. Immunisation providers who are interested in participating in vaccine safety surveillance can email SCHN-AusVaxSafety@health.nsw.gov.au and will be contacted should an opportunity to participate arise. Due to high demand, we may not be able to offer active vaccine safety surveillance to all interested providers.
Occasionally, AusVaxSafety will approach specialised clinics that administer specific vaccines to participate in vaccine safety surveillance to enhance monitoring of vaccines (such as mpox vaccine) that are given to special risk groups.
AusVaxSafety publish infographics specific to Australia showing timely real-world safety data on short-term side effects following immunisation, including all National Immunisation Program Schedule point vaccines, seasonal influenza vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines and respiratory syncytial virus prevention products.
These infographics are updated as often as weekly and are an excellent resource for immunisation providers to use when counselling patients on what to expect in the days following immunisation.
